Sri Lanka joined MMM for the first time in 2019, despite a challenging period in their country

In 2019, the ISH welcomed Sri Lanka to May Measurement Month for the first time.  Sadly the MMM Sri Lanka team were faced with difficult circumstances, as the Country and World were shocked, just days before the start of MMM, by the news of the devastating Easter bombings on the 21st April.

Undeterred and focussing on the importance of raising awareness of the risk of raised blood pressure in their country, the team set about activating their MMM plan.  Ensuring the safety of volunteers and participants they continued with their campaign and brought great ingenuity to the MMM, with blood pressure screening centres in many places from hospitals waiting rooms, to temples and even driving examination centres.  Many organisations got behind MMM including: Sri Lanka Society of Internal Medicine(SLSIM), Department of Nursing, Faculty of Allied Health, University of Peradeniya, Faculty of medicine, University of Peradeniya, Faculty of medicine, University of Jaffna, Faculty of Medicine, University of Batticaloe and Servier Pharma-SriLanka.

Country Leader Dr Wasantha P Dissanayake stated, “In the central province of Kandy, we recruited 800 people in private hospitals, Government Hospitals and the government transport board examination centre.  Around 18 volunteers also participated from the department of Nursing and Allied Health organized by Mrs Renu Kalhari. In the Northern province of Jaffna we recruited nearly 250 people from temples and private hospital visitors. In the Western province, 310 people from hospital visitors and people attending Temples were recruited.  In the Southern province 181 people of Matara hospital visitors and in the Eastern province of Batticaloe 502 people were recruited.
