The National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh takes on the issue of hypertension with MMM19

Bangladesh saw another busy May Measurement Month this year.   To find out more, we spoke to Professor Sohel Reza Choudhury, Professor and Head, Department of Epidemiology & Research, National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute (NHFH&RI) and Secretary General, Hypertension Committee of National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh.

“Background in Bangladesh:

Like many other countries, Bangladesh has been experiencing an epidemiological transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases. With economic development and an increased level of control and treatment of infectious diseases, CVD and other NCDs in adults are becoming a major health problem in the developing countries like Bangladesh.

The recently disseminated report from the National Survey on NCD Risk Factors of Bangladesh 2018, showed that among people aged 18 years and above, 25.2% were hypertensive.

Key learnings and coverage:

Last year in 2018 for MMM18 we received 50 (Fifty) digital blood pressure monitor (Model JPN 1) from the International Society of Hypertension through Omron Dhaka office and this year National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh purchased 100 digital blood pressure monitor for community clinics and the Upazila health complex of Sylhet district. As the number of digital blood pressure monitor is more than that of MMM18 we hope, we will provide more data this year. The month of fasting started on 07 May 2019, so we would like to continue MMM19 activities up to 30 June 2019.
